De är mjuka, lena och följsamma – ändå tolererar de oss som vistas i deras eget hem, havet, utan att på något sätt stöta bort oss. Är vi tillräckligt tacksamma och vänliga tillbaka, för att alger av alla de slag producerar nästan hälften av allt syre runt jordklotet.

Diversity—not just biological, but also in terms of color. Here, the relatively clear water played a part, as did the fact that there was a small area of light-colored sandy bottom further down, which reflected some of the light back up.

This small collection speaks volumes. It’s especially fun for me because I spend a lot of time looking at similar things. I’ve never heard that fact about algae and oxygen but there’s no doubt that people have too little knowledge and appreciation of marine algae.

This fact does not receive the same level of attention in the climate debate. Tropical rainforests, the coniferous forest belt of the tundra, and the flowers all around us are more tangible. Yet photosynthesis—our own planetary incubator—is just as active in the oceans. That is why research into currents and the oceans’ capacity to absorb excess heat is so crucial.
